Fall Layers, Little Legs: Your Bows Babes Guide to Fall Dressing
You know that first cool morning of fall? When you finally dig the cardigan out of the closet and your kid suddenly looks like a tiny, actual person instead of a summer popsicle? That's the good stuff. Maybe it's the smell of a sweater that's been sitting in a drawer since March. Maybe it's watching your toddler stomp through leaves in boots way too big for how tough they're acting. Either way, dressing little ones for fall just hits different.
Here at Bows & Babes, we're obsessed with this season. Cozy sweatshirts, soft leggings, the kind of Mayoral sweaters you'll low-key want to steal for yourself. So grab your coffee (or your fifth pumpkin spice something, no judgment) and let's get your crew fall-ready — baby to almost-too-cool kindergartner.
For the Girls (Infant–Size 6): Cute, Comfy, Ready for Anything
Fall for girls is easy, everyday style with just enough personality to make getting dressed fun. We're loving our new Mayoral pieces mixed right in with our casual line — soft knit cardigans, cozy tops, stuff that goes from school drop-off to the pumpkin patch without a costume change.
What to grab:
Casual dresses
— easy, everyday styles in plaid, rust, and warm fall colors. No occasion required.
Everyday tops
— graphic tees, knit tops, long sleeves that mix with pretty much everything already in her closet.
Leggings
— the real fall MVP. Ribbed, printed, solid, doesn't matter, they go under dresses or with tops and just work.
A jelly purse
— small detail, big personality. Also a really cute little gift add-on.
Layering tip: Fall weather is unpredictable, especially for babies and younger toddlers — 45 degrees at drop-off, 68 by pickup. Skip the one thick sweater and go thin layers instead. Onesie, light knit top, cardigan. Way easier to peel off when the sun comes out.
Styling idea: One casual dress can do a lot. Wear it alone with leggings for school, throw a cardigan over it for the pumpkin patch, add the jelly purse and boots for a family outing. Same dress, three totally different looks.
For the Boys (Infant–4T): Easy, Cozy, Built for Chaos
Boys' fall style needs to keep up with a kid who doesn't really believe in walking when running's an option. This season we're all about soft sweatshirts, knit sweaters, and our custom sports team beanies — a total customer favorite, and honestly the cutest gift for your little Bears, Cubs, or Fighting Illini fan (yes, we can do your team).
What to grab:
A pullover sweatshirt
— the easiest layer that exists. Over a bodysuit for babies, over a tee for toddlers, works for playground days and family photos alike.
A knit sweater
— soft, sturdy, layers over a onesie or bodysuit for the little guys, or stands alone on colder days.
Casual pants
— tough enough for a kid who thinks the ground exists mainly for crawling and sliding on, and easy to mix with anything on top.
A custom team beanie
— the little extra that makes for a great photo and an even better gift.
Fabric tip for active toddlers: Go for soft cotton-blend knits with a bit of stretch — they move with your kid instead of fighting them. Way more forgiving for a day spent climbing on literally everything. Skip anything stiff or structured for the under-3 crowd. Comfort wins, every time.
Layering tip: Size up a little on outer layers like cardigans and jackets. That way there's room to add a sweater underneath once it gets colder, and you get more wear out of fewer pieces — always a win when they're growing this fast.
The Real Secret to Fall Dressing: Build a Capsule, Not a Closet
Here's the thing nobody has time for: outfit-planning every single morning. The fix is picking a handful of pieces that all work together — a few solid basics, one or two statement pieces (that casual dress, that graphic sweatshirt), and layers you can mix freely. Suddenly you've got a dozen outfits instead of a closet full of stuff that only works one way.
We built our fall shop with exactly this in mind — pieces that layer well, mix across sizes and siblings, and hold up to real toddler life. You'll find our new Mayoral pieces and custom beanies in the shop here in Naperville and online, however you like to shop.
